Hi, I’m Chris, one of the co-founders of Shimmer. Last October, following my ADHD diagnosis, I launched Shimmer ( https://shimmer.care ), one-to-one ADHD Coaching for adults. Our HN launch was here: https://ift.tt/AZ5plfR . A quick recap before I dive into our new launch: Shimmer is an ADHD coaching service for adults. We took apart the traditionally expensive, inaccessible ADHD coaching offering ($300-600+/session) and redesigned it from first principles. You get matched with one of our expert ADHD coaches, meet weekly over video, and get supported throughout the week via text and with learning tools. This solution is special to me personally (and our community) because it doesn’t just give you “knowledge” or offer another “tool”—our coaches help you set realistic goals, take personalized steps towards it, and keep you accountable. Today we’re excited to launch our most-request feature: Web. Over the past 9 months, we learned (and iterated) a lot with our members and coaches. A few key challenges pointed to the need for a web version: (1) ADHD “object permanence” challenges (e.g. out of sight out of mind), we needed to be multi-platform so when you finish a task or goal or encounter a challenge, regardless of if you’re near your laptop or phone, you can check it off & ping your coach right away, (2) members used reflection modules (e.g. after each task, you’re prompted to reflect on what worked and didn’t work, and it informs your coach) more thoroughly than we originally anticipated, and web allows for deeper reflection and typing, (3) overarching coaching goals were often forgotten during the day-to-day, and the web makes it easier to use visual cues to keep goals top of mind for motivation, (4) many of our members struggle with phone addiction and driving members to the mobile app ended them up in Tiktok/IG, whereas the web app offers a focused environment to get in their “coaching zone”. Our new web app was designed alongside over 1,200 members, 22 coaches, countless hours of testing and iterating. We’re excited (but nervous!) to unveil this new version. We know these prices are expensive for many people with ADHD and we’re committed to bringing costs down over time. It’s more affordable than what many people are paying for coaches, but the fact that we’re relying on humans, and not going the “we can automate all this with AI” route, puts a floor on how low the costs can drop. Hi HN, Code Llama was released, but we noticed a ton of questions in the main thread about how/where to use it — not just from an API or the terminal, but in your own codebase as a drop-in replacement for Copilot Chat. Without this, developers don't get much utility from the model. This concern is also important because benchmarks like HumanEval don't perfectly reflect the quality of responses. There's likely to be a flurry of improvements to coding models in the coming months, and rather than relying on the benchmarks to evaluate them, the community will get better feedback from people actually using the models. This means real usage in real , everyday workflows. Hi HN, pykoi is an open-source python library for ML scientists. pykoi makes it easier to collect data for LLMs, to use that data for finetuning, and to compare models to each other (e.g. your model pre- and post- finetuning, or your model vs openai vs claude). The library comes from pain points we experienced in LLM development: 1. Collecting feedback data from users isn't as easy as it could be. (The current process usually involves sharing excel files of annotated responses back-and-forth, offering no insight into how users actually engage with your models). 2. RLHF remains complicated to carry out. By complicated , we mean requires a lot of steps, hundreds of configs, lengthy setups, etc. 3. Comparing models to each other as they're used (that is, independent from academic metrics) is full of friction. The current approach: spin up a model, ask questions, write them down. Repeat for other models then compare. At a high-level, we think that the active learning process should be closed-loop: data collection, fine tuning, and inference all feed from the same system. Recently there was a thread about a "breakthrough" in battery technology at Toyota. https://ift.tt/1BqfpxP Toyota has been putting out PR puff pieces about their "solid-state" (solid-electrolyte) batteries for years, but this story was unique in that it had a quote from Keiji Kaita, who holds some high-level role at Toyota. Anyway, I didn't think much of it, because there was no paper referenced in the Guardian article, which seemed to be the original source. But while reading about something else, I came across the paper "A near dimensionally invariable high-capacity positive electrode material", published in Nature Materials last December: https://ift.tt/Dju9Mop This paper, reporting a cathode that has very little (much less than normal) change in size or shape when charged and discharged, claims reversible storage with a solid electrolyte. It stands to reason that dimensional stability of the cathode is necessary for interfacing with a solid electrolyte, since if it swells and shrinks, it will probably detach from the electrolyte, and possibly damage it further. Looking at the affiliations of some of the authors we see a number of contributors from the "Lithium Ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center (LIBTEC)". A web search about LIBTEC leads to several articles from 2018: https://ift.tt/sB6ErtU... which state that Toyota, along with Nissan, Honda and Panasonic (Tesla's major collaborator), have established this consortium to work on solid-electrolyte batteries as of five years ago. So what does this thing look like? It's a vanadium–titanium cathode, Li8Ti2V4O14. Titanium is common; vanadium technically has a higher crustal abundance than nickel, but it tends to be spread across low-quality deposits, so production is low right now. A review considering the resource outlook for V-based batteries [1] was guardedly optimistic. 750 Wh/kg is great . Vanadium cathodes historically had a problem with high dimensional instability , but it appears that cocrystallization with titanium may have fixed that, and the weird properties of vanadium became an advantage in compensating for Li+ influx/efflux. The use of a sulfide electrolyte pours doubt on claims of safety, though. It's reasonably likely that if water were to come into contact with the electrolyte, it could release highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Also, since the battery was developed in collaboration with other major automakers (and funded by the Japanese government), it's somewhat questionable to think it would give Toyota a major advantage in the EV race.
